A Note From the Headmaster

Dear Glendale Prep Families,

Recently, I was taken back to a few books on Western History by the scholar Christopher Dawson. Dawson wrote widely about Europe, Culture, Education, and more, but of his numerous insights about people living and working together one really stood out to me. Perhaps it stands out because of the emphasis we place on character or perhaps, better still because so many have for so long put an emphasis on character and yet disregarded ethical living. In any case, when reflecting on what binds and rends culture, Dawson writes: “A culture is a very fragile thing, and the delicate balance of its social structure is overthrown as soon as its spiritual limits are broken and its individual members lose their faith in the validity and efficiency of its moral order.” One could write an essay about Dawson’s insight here, but one takeaway for us is that the value of the work we do with young people is rooted in a belief that there is something transcendent about what it means to live well. Regardless of time and place, humans are to live well – making full use of their minds and hearts for the sake of the good. When we stop believing that, then the whole enterprise crumbles. It is our responsibility, as teachers and parents, to live in such a way that is worthy of all we extol to our students and children. May we never be guilty of giving our children the impression that when it comes to seeking the good they should “do as we say and not as we do”.

Thank you for working with us and encouraging us to live with integrity.

Have a terrific weekend!

Sincerely yours,
Brandon Crowe
Headmaster
