A Note From the Headmaster
Dear GP Community, I want to share a book recommendation with you. The book is controversially titled The Coddling of the American Mind. It’s one of those titles that’s intended to provoke; however, the ideas are powerful. In essence, the book explores some of the history and reasons for a new generation of adolescent behavior and attitudes. The authors, both scholars, suggest that some of the ancient wisdom that has guided humanity for millennia has recently, and unfortunately, been turned on its head. Rather than “preparing the child for the road ahead”, the road is being prepared by adults so that children are often unable to mature and to work through and overcome challenges. The book has been endorsed from the likes of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Robert George, and a host of others. This important book has pushed me to think harder about my aims in raising my own children and the goals of our shared work at Glendale Prep. If you are interested, here’s a recent interview with one of the authors: https://www.npr.org/2018/09/04/644446963/authors-of-a-new-book-take-on-the-coddling-of-american-minds Have a great weekend!
