A Note From the Headmaster

Greetings,

This past Tuesday, I lost my voice and was likely running a fever. But I so wanted to attend the high school concert, particularly because it was the last time our seniors would sing for GP and with each other. What I witnessed was certainly beautiful sounds and melodies, but it was about seeing the genuine passion that our students have for singing and for their choir teacher, Mr. Liles. There is a special moment at the end of each spring concert where Mr. Liles individually honors each senior, sharing where he or she is attending college, and the selected major. It is a special time because it is a fitting goodbye for so many who have shared their soul with us through their voice for the last number of years.

Well, at this concert, the seniors had something special planned. They shared their love for Mr. Liles by having Mr. Max Johnson and Ms. Rachel Ong speak; then all of the seniors held hands and honored Mr. Liles with a song about coming home, as well as invited all to sing him a happy birthday.

The night ended with Mr. Liles holding his son, Augustin, in his arms while the students, faculty, and family sang our school song together.

My soul was refreshed in seeing the fruit of what we care most deeply about at GP- the meaningful human connection required to enable students to love what they should love. Mr. Liles knows his students and loves them; the effect was seen in they came to love what he loves, music and its beauty, but also this- they came to love their teacher and honored him. This is rare today among adults, let alone young people, who will lead and form our culture for the next generation. My heart was lifted that night and for those of you who were there, I hope the same for you.

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Curricular Drama Performances
11th grade students currently taking Drama 4th period will be performing their curricular play tonight, Friday, May 17th at 7:30 p.m. 6th period will be performing tomorrow, Saturday, May 18th at 2:00 p.m. Both performances are free, and friends and family are encouraged to attend. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. LeTrent at kletrent@glendaleprep.org.

Last Week of School
Last Day – Attendance Required: Attendance is mandatory on the last day of school. We will be honoring our students at an all-school awards ceremony and signing yearbooks. NO SHARPIE PENS are allowed on campus for yearbook signing. A very limited number of yearbooks are available on a first come, first serve basis for $50 cash or check made out to Glendale Prep. If you are unsure if you purchased one, please check your payment portal account under “Account” then “Orders” and “Order History”.

Griffin Goodbye: Glendale Prep is happy to provide this time and space to encourage and support friendship and connection. Our PSO will hold this event in the cafeteria Thursday, May 23rd from 12:05 p.m. to 12:35 p.m. Students will be able to buy ice cream for $1 each and get their yearbooks signed by friends and teachers. Please remind students to bring a dollar for ice cream with them that morning prior to school and their yearbook the following day for another opportunity to get their yearbook signed.

Textbook Return: Parents, please instruct your children to gather all of their school-issued textbooks. Remind them to bring the appropriate school-issued textbook with them to each scheduled exam. All textbooks must be returned to their teacher during semester exams in order to receive a full roll-over on your textbook deposit for the next school year. Any textbooks not turned in or not in usable condition by Friday, May 24th will be taken out of the textbook deposit.

Final Exams: Exams will be administered beginning on Tuesday, May 21st through Thursday, May 23rd. The exams will be comprehensive of the material taught in Quarters 3 and 4. We ask parents to discuss the importance of semester exams with their sons and daughters, to encourage them to communicate with their teachers if they have questions on how to best prepare for exams, and to attend tutoring to gain clarity on areas of concern.

At the start of your journey with Glendale Prep, you submitted a textbook deposit for your student. Please fill out the textbook deposit refund form here if you haven’t already.

Senior Graduation Rehearsal will take place on Friday, May 24th at Glendale Nazarene Church, at 2:00 p.m. (this is an early release day). Rehearsal should take approximately one hour, and all seniors and faculty members are required to attend.

Senior Graduation will be on Saturday, May 25th at 2:00 p.m. at Glendale Nazarene Church, located at 5902 W Cactus Rd, Glendale, AZ 85304. 8th Grade Promotion
Families of 8th grade students are invited to the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony on Friday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Glendale Prep Gymnasium. 8th graders should arrive by 6:30 p.m. As a reminder, the student dress code for the evening is as follows:

Gentlemen should wear slacks, a button-up shirt, a tie, and dress shoes.

Ladies’ dresses should have necklines within four finger widths below the collarbone. The length of the dress should also not be shorter than four fingers (approx. 2 inches) above the knee. No see-through dresses or dresses with open backs. Shoulders should be covered, so please wear a sweater over strapless dresses or dresses with spaghetti straps. Ladies should also wear dress shoes in which it is easy to walk up the stairs and across the stage.

Dress code will be checked before the ceremony and any student out of dress code will need to change. Please email Ms. Hudson (ehudson@glendaleprep.org) with any questions.

A Note From Our Nurses
If your student has medications in the Nurse’s Office, these will need to be picked up before summer break. Medication may not be kept over the summer months. You received an email requesting permission to send the medication home with your student; please be sure to respond to that email. Then remind your student to come at dismissal on Friday, May 24th so that we can give them the medication. If these medications are not picked up, we have no choice but to dispose of them. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact the Nurse’s Office at 623-889-0822 x1605.

Summer School
Last chance to register for Summer School at Glendale Prep! The two courses offered this year are:

The Pre-Algebra Readiness class will be from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. This course will be taught by Mr. Thompson, who teaches Geometry and Humane Letters at Glendale Prep.

The Reading and Writing Readiness class will be from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. This course will be taught by Ms. O’Rourke, who teaches 6th and 7th grade Literature and Composition at the Glendale Prep. This course will require the purchasing of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle; 978-0312367541.

Students who attend both classes will have a lunch break from 11:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.; students will need to bring their own lunch. The cost is $200 per course or $325 for both courses.

Feel free to contact Mr. Withers at zwithers@glendaleprep.org with any questions or concerns.

Veritas Prep and Cicero Prep are also offering Summer Courses open to all Great Hearts students. Courses range from Math & Reading to online typing to in-class enrichment courses like Art, Spanish, and Poetry. See Veritas’ catalog here and see Cicero’s catalog here.

Credit Make-Up
Per school policy, students who receive an F in the second semester of any course at Glendale Prep will be required to make up the course over the summer in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Please contact Mr. Withers at zwithers@glendaleprep.org to see about summer classes that may satisfy a necessary credit.

Volunteer Fingerprinting Opportunity
Our volunteers are one of the reasons Glendale Prep is such an amazing school and community. Glendale Prep will be offering an opportunity to help you become a part of that community by providing a fingerprint session on Wednesday, June 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you are planning to help at the school or any school event, you will need to go through this fingerprinting process. Most often fingerprint clearances are good for three years. Please schedule your appointment time here.

The school incurs a $20 processing fee from the state of AZ for each volunteer fingerprinted. If you are able to make a donation to help offset the cost, we would be grateful. A donation can be made on the payment portal, or by cash/check to the front office. Fingerprint clearances issued by Glendale Prep are valid for Archway Glendale, as well.

Griffin Athletes
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, June 1st from 1:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m. for the first Annual Carson von Aspen 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament; from here on out it will be known as the CVA5 3 on 3 Tournament. This is a double-elimination tournament and is open to not only Glendale Prep students, but alumni and parents as well. The cost is $30 a team to be paid at the door. Sign up your team with Mr. Navarrette, as there are limited openings. All proceeds will go to the Carson von Aspen Memorial Fund. If you do not want to play in the tournament but would like to help work with the event, please contact Mr. Navarrette. The only requirement is to come with the same spirit Carson brought every time to the court.

If you were unable to complete your physical at Glendale Prep a few weeks ago for the 2019-20 school year, please schedule an appointment with your doctor to get that done over the summer. View the forms here to take to your doctor and turn into Athletic Director Mr. Garrison or the front office at the beginning of the school year, or prior to beginning a 2019-20 sport.

Not Returning?
If your plans have changed or you are moving this summer, and you will not return to Glendale Prep for the 2019-20 school year, please contact Mrs. Hayakawa as soon as possible so she can ensure that you get your textbook deposit refund. Email her at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org.
