A Note From the Headmaster
Greetings,I finished a book titled From Temperament to Character- On Becoming a Virtuous Leader by Alexandre Havard, and I wanted to share some of the helpful gems I found in it. It is a book where one comes to see his/her inclination and the virtues one must strive to develop in order to be an effective leader.

Havard focuses on the four temperaments-

  • Choleric: Action-Oriented
  • Melancholics: Idea-Oriented
  • Sanguine: People-Oriented
  • Phlegmatic: Peace-Oriented.

What is proposed is that we have two temperaments that dominate in us that may make it difficult to develop specific virtues because of our natural inclinations.

  • Cholerics may be inclined to pride, anger, and rashness
  • Melancholics may be inclined to self-absorption, pessimism, and magnify difficulties to avoid risks
  • Sanguines may be inclined to superficiality; motivated in large part by fun; easily distracted by something new; are tempted to forsake what they know is right to fit in with the crowd
  • Phlegmatics are content with the status quo, security, and routine; indecisive; prone to passivity.

With any description of human personality, we must be careful to not pigeonhole ourselves or others, but as parents, I think it is important to know the temperament of our children. We can then help them to focus on specific virtues- for Cholerics– prudence and humility; Melancholics– courage, and justice; Sanguines– self-mastery; Phlegmatics– magnanimity.

I hope this brief summary was helpful in learning about yourself, your children, and how best to guide them during these formidable years.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster
