A Note from Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I hope you and your family have a wonderful break together this coming week. Breaks are such a fitting opportunity to reflect, find renewal, and ultimately enjoy a well-deserved rest. Rest is something so natural and meaningful when it comes after a good work.

It has certainly been a busy 3rd Quarter, and I am thankful for the work our students and teachers have put forth each day. This week alone was packed with so many different and yet vital events – We had the Night of the Griffins, various national foreign language exams, three teaching candidate visits, three days of re-enrollment, a teacher-students’ seminar on a Flannery O’Connor short story, two senior thesis defenses, spring football workouts in the damp field, basketball open gyms, more than a half-dozen different athletic practices, and our seniors are in Washington D.C. with Mr. Mahar, Ms. Roiger, Mr. Withers, Mr. Oakes, and Madam Pereira as you read this.

Our campus and community are thriving with energy, life, joy, and comradery. There is so much good work taking place. I see the fruit in and through your sons and daughters as they smile and greet me in the halls. I see the fruit with each teacher observation and in the faculty office as Humane Letter teachers work to craft the perfect seminar question; Science teachers planning out the next model or lab; math teachers planning to teach about asymptotes (learned that one this week). I see the fruit as I listen to students sing in the gym lobby on a raining morning and practice lines for their plays as I walk in the gym. Just yesterday, I saw the fruit when I gazed at the senior drawings posted outside the art room.

Next week certainly brings a fitting rest, and I look forward to a renewed and strong 4th Quarter together.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette

Traffic Safety
Parents, please be sure that we are putting student safety first when dropping off and picking up. Students should only exit or enter a vehicle when stopped at the curb. Students should not exit or enter a vehicle when the car has not pulled up to the curb. Also, please make sure when students are exiting, they use the doors adjacent to the curb. If for some reason a younger student must exit the side of the vehicle closest to the street, we ask that they do so with an adult to make sure no cars are passing by the queue. Thank you for our help in keeping all of our students safe.

Uniform Shorts Permitted
As a reminder, khaki uniform shorts may be worn upon our return from Spring Break on Monday, March 25th, until the end of the school year. Shorts should go to just above the knee but not below, and should not be excessively tight or loose-fitting. White, ankle-high socks may be worn with shorts.

Senior Thesis Panels
All Senior Thesis Panels will take place after school and consist of two main parts:  1)  The Thesis Presentation: a brief presentation (of about 10 minutes) in which the student will highlight the essential ideas of the paper; and 2) The Thesis Panel Discussion: a panel of three faculty readers will be convened to conduct a discussion with the student about his or her Thesis. Family, friends, and members of the Glendale Prep community at large are invited to attend. Please enter through the front office and sign-in.

After Spring Break the following students will have their panels:

Panel Date/Time Senior Student
Monday, March 25th at 3:30 p.m. Maise Baird
Tuesday, March 26th at 3:30 p.m. Jayme Terpstra
Wednesday, March 27th at 3:30 p.m. Megan Downey
Thursday, March 28th at 3:30 p.m. Monica Lopez

Students will depart by bus at 8:30 a.m. sharp (please arrive by 8:00 a.m.) and must bring a sack lunch. Only water is permitted on the bus. In lieu of AZMerit testing for high school students, we will administer an in-school SAT for all of our Junior students. This is something our 11th grade students take each Spring for college applications. We believe this serves our students well in a number of ways; particularly, we can build off the results of PSAT scores and help students achieve benchmarks. 9th grade students will only be required to take the AIMS science test. 10th and 12th grade students will not participate in testing.

France 2020
Do you want to eat a croissant in a cafe with a view of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, chase Marie-Antoinette’s ghost in the Palais of Versailles, feel like a Lord walking in the castles of la Loire, or see the beaches of Normandy where the American and English troops arrived in 1944 to liberate France and Europe?

Here is the opportunity to live your dream: a trip to France in June 2020 (with Educational First travel). A family meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the library at Glendale Prep to answer all your questions. To attend it, please RSVP to Madame Pereira: cpereira@glendaleprep.org. If you can’t make it but want more information, RSVP using the link and select “I can’t make it” online: rsvp.eftours.com/jnmnf.

5th & 6th Period Class Switch
Thursday, March 28th, 6th period classes will be switched. Immediately after lunch, students will attend their 6th period class followed by their 5th period class. Please take note of this for any appointments you have planned for your student(s). If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Drake at sdrake@glendaleprep.org.

8th Grade Field Trip
The 8th Grade Field Trip to the ASU Planetarium is scheduled for Thursday, April 11th. All families have paid and given permission for the field trip as a part of their consumable contribution, therefore, no further action is needed.

Regular Uniform Dress Code is required. Students will depart by bus at 8:15 a.m. sharp (please arrive by the start of school at 8:05 a.m.) and must bring a sack lunch to be eaten after their visit; so please DO NOT order a hot lunch for your 8th grader that day. Only water is permitted on the bus. Students will be released at the usual time of 3:05 p.m.

The expectation is that all 8th grade students will attend. If your student is unable to attend, please contact Ms. McLoughlin at tmcloughlin@glendaleprep.org.

Student Summer Job Opportunity
Anton Uniforms is opening a pop-up store on the west side during the summertime. This summer they will have it open July 8th to August 17th.  Anton will be looking to hire 5-6 students to work hours roughly 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday and Saturdays 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with flexible hours. They can work up to 29 hours if they wish. Students must be reliable and show enthusiasm for this opportunity. Anton would have them start working roughly the third week of June, to train them. Students would also receive a discount on their school uniform for the next school year. Please reach out to Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org if your student is interested.
