A Note From the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

Athletics was something so profoundly instrumental in shaping me into the man I am today. Some of you may be surprised, but I was a young boy with a lot of energy and tended to get my work done quickly and then found myself trying to entertain myself by talking in class and hoping to get a good laugh. One solution my mother proposed was imploring to my teachers, “Just give him more work”. Well, I did that work just as fast and the behavioral issues did not subside until my mother realized something- take away what he loves. It took missing one practice and for a coach to sit down with me and partner with my mother to teach me respect. It was then I became a decent young man, but so much was learned through athletics- sacrifice, seeing fruit come through suffering, self-respect, and school pride. I came to see this, as well, when I partook in other extra-curricular groups in high school including speech, choir, and student leadership. They, too, helped me develop leadership skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with others who had different personalities and talents.

The Extra-Curricular Arizona Tax Credit is such a vital way for you or anyone you know to direct your state tax to Glendale Prep. If not directed to GP, the state will use however it sees fit. This is another opportunity for you to affirm your school choice not only where you send your child, but also where your money will be directed. We are currently 130 tax credits short of our budgeted goal, which means those are funds that our athletics and extra-curriculars will not see and be able to utilize for our students. There are some sports and extra-curriculars that are currently running at a deficit, but I am unwilling, at this time, to cut any programs because I know the value is instrumental to the training up of the next generations of young men and women. So, I am asking you to think about any family member or friend that has yet to direct their Arizona state tax to Glendale Prep.

We are also promoting one last competition- for every tax credit received in your name or referred by you, you will receive one raffle ticket; for every two tax credits, you will receive three raffle tickets. Winner will receive two hours of open gym on a Saturday with a dozen friends. There will be pizza, teachers, and of course, myself.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in shaping our scholars into who they will be tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette

2019-2020 Academic Calendar
The official 2019-2020 academic calendar is now available on our website and can be viewed here. This calendar contains important dates such as Bookstore, first and last days of school, breaks, and early release days. As we grow, it has become increasingly difficult to include all school events on the pdf calendar.

Quarter 3 Deficiency Notices
Quarter 3 Deficiencies were sent out this week via email. GP teachers take the time to detail areas of concern and specific areas needing improvement. If your student received a Deficiency Notice, please sign and return the notice with your student. Teachers are always available to help students during tutoring hours. View the tutoring schedule here.

National Latin and Greek Exam
Students who study Latin or Greek will be taking the National Latin or National Greek Exam, during 1st Period, on Thursday, February 28th. All students will have a slightly modified schedule. Lunch will be moved up 25 minutes; 1st lunch will begin at 11:35 a.m. and 2nd lunch will begin at 12:05 p.m. Due to the standardized nature of the test, it will not be possible to reschedule the test if your student is absent. Please ensure your student arrives at school by 8:00 a.m.

Griffin Robotics
The Robotics Team at Glendale Prep, Griffin Robotics, had their last competition this past weekend at Canyon View High School. They did well individually, but as the competition involves cooperation from a teammate, they ended up going 2-3 during the qualifying matches. They did so well during those qualifying matches that they were picked to compete in the elimination matches but ended up not making it outside of the first round. I am very proud of how much the team is improved through the year in designing and implementing those designs and proud of the Judges Award and the Second Place Alliance award we received during the competitions this season.

We now move into a postseason to train new members and provide new challenges for those who want to continue and perhaps take on a new role on the team. We are currently looking for new members for next season and invite them to take part in this postseason time.  If your student has an interest in joining for next season, please have him or her talk to Mr. Roper.

The middle school awards will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. and high school awards at 8:00 p.m. There will be a 15-minute intermission between the two ceremonies to celebrate with cake. Those families who do not have high school athletes may leave after cake; however, you are more than welcome to attend both ceremonies. Young men should wear a dress shirt and tie, and ladies should wear a modest-length skirt or dress with hems that approach the knee or dress pants. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Drake at sdrake@glendaleprep.org.
