A Note From the Headmaster

Growing up, we had a tradition that on Thanksgiving Day every person goes around and shares what he or she is thankful for. Well, I find myself wanting to share my thankfulness for so many people. I am thankful for our front office ladies, Mrs. Mooberry, Mrs. Edmiston, and Mrs. McHale, who are always smiling, greeting, and caring for the needs of our students and teachers.

I am thankful for Mrs. Hayakawa who is so efficient with communication and record-keeping but also looks out for what is best for our community and the values we hold.

I am thankful for Mrs. Sparks who has the difficult job of finding ways to help us bridge the gap so that we can continue to provide a wonderful education and extra-curriculars for our students.

I am thankful for Mrs. Ayer and all the members of our PSO for finding ways to promote a sense of community at our school.

I am thankful for Mrs. Hastings and Mrs. Bulthaup who provide extra support for our exceptional students.

I am thankful for Ms. McLoughlin for making sure our campus is clean, schedules flow, while also organizing events such as field day, so they run smoothly and are most enjoyable for our students.

I am thankful for Mr. Withers and Mr. Weisse who always make time to discuss the needs of our community and share ideas about how best to support our teachers and students.

I am thankful to Mr. Mahar and Ms. Hudson for their commitment to ensuring our school culture is one where students feel known and loved.

I am thankful for Mr. Drake who coordinates our athletic events as a whole, while also bringing vision for how to promote and support each sport individually.

I am thankful for our counselor, Molly Caldwell, who helps support our students with unique needs.

I am thankful for our college counselors, Mrs. Sarbacker and Mrs. Thorpe, for helping students plan for their journey after high school.

I am thankful for our nurses, Mrs. Dela Cruz, and Mrs. Madeya, who are there “just in case” our students are not feeling well.

I am thankful for our facilities technician, Dan Mangus, for speedily making repairs and solving problems.

I am thankful for our day porter, Sandra, who helps clean our facilities throughout the day.

I am thankful for our teachers, who pour their lives into our students each and every day not merely to teach a subject but to inspire greatness; for our coaches who dedicate their time to help students grow through competition; for our teachers running extracurricular activities as they provide further enrichment; to our parent volunteers who blessed us with their service by giving of their time.

I am thankful for you, our parents, who trust us and support us in our work of teaching not merely facts and skills, but virtues and habits.

I am thankful for our students, who bring energy, joy, and care to our campus each day with their greetings and showing forth their own gratitude.

May we have a heart of gratitude not merely on Thanksgiving Day, but every day we share together.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Community Investment
Great Hearts believes in the importance of a thorough immersion in Music for our students. We believe that Music instruction is an education in beauty. Through their experiences of performing classic works of music and understanding music theory, our students experience the discipline and humility that true creativity requires.

It is through your gifts to Community Investment that we are able to offer Music to our students.

We are honored to publicly recognize those families and friends who have already contributed to Glendale Prep’s Community Investment campaign. THANK YOU!

To make a pledge to Glendale Prep’s 2018-19 Community Investment campaign you can:

Quarter 2 Deficiency Notices
Quarter 2 Deficiencies were sent out last week via email. GP teachers take the time to detail areas of concern and specific areas needing improvement. If your student received a Deficiency Notice, please sign and return the notice with your student. Teachers are always available to help students during tutoring hours. View the tutoring schedule here.

12th Grade Drama Performances
Moliere’s Tartuffe : The seniors present this sparkling French comedy of wit about a con-man who wheedles his way into an aristocratic family, and through the father’s folly, brings them to the brink of ruin on Saturday, December 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Chekov’s Three SistersThe seniors present this Russian Drama, which follows a family over the course of years as the sibling goes from the hopes of adolescence to the realities of adulthood, on Saturday, December 8th at 7:30 p.m. By turns hilarious and devastating, Chekov masterfully depicts the human condition.

Both performances will be held in the Glendale Prep Gymnasium and are free for all to attend!

Great Hearts Counseling Discussion: Students & Anxiety
Our counselor, Molly Caldwell, and the director of school counseling for Great Hearts, Lauren Katz, will be here on Wednesday, December 5th from 6:00 p.m. -7:15 p.m. to present on anxiety. This discussion will explain how, as parents, you can recognize signs of anxiety and offer you specific tools help your son or daughter. Molly spoke with our entire faculty about this same topic a month ago and will continue to meet with us throughout the school year to discuss other topics as well. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A time.

Project Week
Project Week this year is January 7th – January 11th. This project is an important part of the curriculum at Glendale Prep. During the week, all students will complete an independent study assignment at home (reading and writing) on a specific text related to a particular subject in their grade’s curriculum. More detailed information was sent in a previous email.

Please make sure not to order a hot lunch for your High School student (9th-12th grade) the day we return from winter break as the PSO provides pizza for the High School Symposium. (6th-8th graders DO need to order or bring a lunch for that day.)

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be January 7th – January 11th. At least one parent/guardian of each student is expected to attend parent-teacher conferences. All conferences will be fifteen minutes long.

A separate e-mail was sent from SignUp Genius with a link to reserve a time slot for your conference. If you have multiple students at GP, you were sent separate SignUp Genius emails with a unique link for each grade/section. If you did not receive the SignupGenius email, please contact Mrs. Hayakawa at shayakawa@glendaleprep.org right away. Please do not send requests for conferences via email. Conferences are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please report to the front office at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled conference time. Conferences are scheduled back to back; therefore, your timeliness is very important. We thank you in advance for your support in helping to make these important academic events a success. Please be sure to read your student’s semester evaluations carefully prior to conferences. Student evaluations will be emailed to parents before January 7th.
