A Note from Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I wanted to share with you that our President, Erik Twist, has been down at the state capitol on a weekly basis to advocate the state legislature on behalf of Glendale Prep and the other schools in the GreatHearts network. Many districts and schools are waiting to learn about budget decisions to see how the state will allocate funds for education.

We are hoping lawmakers will ensure equity for charter schools in the 2019 session. As it stands, the average state funding per pupil in K-12 is $10,120. The average funding per a Great Hearts pupil is $7,334. That leaves a gap of $2,786 per pupil and means each classroom is operating from a $60-80K deficit. In total, the Great Hearts network is losing $38 million it could receive from the state to serve Arizona families.

This gap has been filled by the generosity and sacrifice of you, our parents. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care and for investing more in your child’s education and formation than what is asked of parents whose students attend the district schools. I take great pride in the quality of education we provide for our students and the extra-curricular opportunities that avail them despite the funding gap.  However, I take pride mostly in the character of our students and your commitment to believe their integrity and heart are most important for them to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

Please consider learning more about the reasons for the funding gap and making your voice heard. If you have any desire to join Erik Twist down at the capitol, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Mr. Navarrette

Tax Credit
Don’t miss the deadline to make your tax credit! Arizona Public School Tax Credit contributions must be made by April 15th to receive your dollar-for-dollar credit on your state taxes. Do you have questions about the Tax Credit and how it is a win-win for you and our school? Please contact Cathy Sparks at 623.889.0822 ext. 1502 or csparks@glendaleprep.org

Griffin Players Drama Performance
Please join the Griffin Players for their spring production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard tonight, Friday, April 5th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 6th at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Come see what happens when two minor characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet become aware that they are in a play, and the story gets turned on its head as we follow the struggles and questions of the “little guy”. The play will be presented “black box” style with the audience seated on the stage so tickets are extremely limited. Don’t miss out, get your tickets today here on the GP payment portal. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for others.

Senior Thesis Panels
Senior Thesis Panels are in full swing. Family, friends, and members of the Glendale Prep community at large are invited to attend. Please enter through the front office and sign-in. The following students will have their panels:

SAT – Tuesday, April 9th
In lieu of AzMERIT testing for high school students, we will administer an in-school SAT for all of our 11th grade students. This is something our 11th graders take each Spring for college applications. We believe this serves our students well in a number of ways; particularly, we can build off the results of PSAT scores and help students achieve benchmarks.

Please ensure your student: (1) gets a good night’s sleep, (2) eats a nourishing breakfast, (3) brings a small snack, (4) arrives to school on time, and (5) has no appointments scheduled before noon on this day. Additionally, please have him/her bring: (1) extra #2 pencils and (2) a calculator.

Quarter 3 Evaluations
Please note, grades will only be available to be viewed until Monday, April 8th. You are welcome to print a hard copy and/or save in pdf form for your records.

8th Grade Field Trip
The 8th Grade Field Trip to the ASU Planetarium is Thursday, April 11th. All families have paid and given permission for the field trip as a part of their consumable contribution, therefore, no further action is needed.

Regular Uniform Dress Code is required. Students will depart by bus at 8:15 a.m. sharp (please arrive by the start of school at 8:05 a.m.) and must bring a sack lunch to be eaten after their visit. Only water is permitted on the bus. Students will be released at the usual time of 3:05 p.m.

The expectation is that all 8th grade students will attend. If your student is unable to attend, please contact Ms. McLoughlin at tmcloughlin@glendaleprep.org.

Great Hearted Teachers
Dear Great Hearts Families,

As I’m sure you’ll agree, finding the right teachers to join our academic communities – faculty who are virtuous and have rich intellectual lives, who are subject-matter experts, committed to A life-long-learning and the true, good, and beautiful – is quite simply the most essential element of our academies’ success.

Our recruiting efforts are tremendously strengthened by the “word-of-mouth” promotion of Great Hearts teaching opportunities to the broader local community through our own academy families. You were so gracious to share information about our Career Fair last month, and several of you asked if we could give you general materials regarding our recruitment/hiring to share with colleagues, friends, family members, and/or neighbors whom you’d love to encourage to work for Great Hearts. Please feel free to share this in any way you’d like – via email, social media, etc.

Also, please always feel free to reach out to us directly at careers@greatheartsamerica.org.

Thank you much,
Kiann Mapes, and the Faculty Talent Team

Science Fair
The first annual Glendale Great Hearts Science Fair is Saturday, April 13th, from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. We have 17 students registered, representing grades 4th-9thgrade. The students are very enthusiastic about this Science Fair, and we need volunteers to make this the best possible experience for our scholars!

If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ustach at custach@glendaleprep.org

Junior & Senior Promenade
The honor of your presence is requested at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix for Glendale Preparatory Academy’s 2019 Prom, on Saturday, April 27th at 6:30 p.m. It will be an elegant evening of dinner, dancing, and conspiracy that takes the classic game of Clue off the board and into real life. STRICT DEADLINE for permission form and ticket purchase is Sunday, April 21st. Get your tickets now on the payment portal!

All attendees are required to attend dance lessons prior to Prom. Seniors and their guests must attend three hours of lessons, juniors and their guests must attend five hours. Students can, of course, choose to attend more than the required amount. It is the responsibility of the student to speak directly with Ms. Roiger or Ms. McLoughlin right away, if they have a conflict with the lesson schedule.

Only 8 lessons remain: Tuesday & Thursday through April 25th from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays, April 6th & 13th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. All dance lessons will take place in the Art Room. Students, please enter through the gym lobby on Saturdays.

Senior Dinner
All Seniors and up to two parents/guardians are invited to the Senior Dinner on Saturday, May 18th. Each senior will receive a tribute speech from a Glendale Prep faculty or staff member. Please RSVP to the Senior Dinner by emailing tmcloughlin@glendaleprep.org with attendee names by Friday, April 19th.

We ask all Senior parents to put together a photo collage of their child to be displayed at the Senior Dinner. Collages can span your graduate’s entire childhood, and may vary in size, but must not exceed the size of a poster board. Because collages will be displayed outdoors, photos should be placed in a frame (preferred, due to high winds) or firmly secured to your display. Please deliver your collage to the school by Thursday, May 16th.

College Counseling
Great Hearts is hosting a BYU Representative, Levi Heperi, on Tuesday, April 16th at 7:00 p.m. at North Phoenix Prep. Click here to register.

Emory, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, University of Virginia, and Washington University in St. Louis will be hosting an information session on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Phoenix Country Day School. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here.

The College Counseling department is trying to determine if there is enough interest to host a Summer SAT Workshop in June. If you are interested in having your student participate, please send an email to Mrs. Sarbacker at ksarbacker@glendaleprep.org. The workshop will begin with a practice test on Saturday, June 1st (8am – 12pm) and conclude with a second practice test on Saturday, June 15th (8am – 12pm). The group will meet Monday-Thursday (8am–12pm) from June 3rd through June 13th.  The cost for the workshop will be $399.
