A Note from Headmaster
Hello Parents, I wanted to share with you that our President, Erik Twist, has been down at the state capitol on a weekly basis to advocate the state legislature on behalf of Glendale Prep and the other schools in the GreatHearts network. Many districts and schools are waiting to learn about budget decisions to see how the state will allocate funds for education. We are hoping lawmakers will ensure equity for charter schools in the 2019 session. As it stands, the average state funding per pupil in K-12 is $10,120. The average funding per a Great Hearts pupil is $7,334. That leaves a gap of $2,786 per pupil and means each classroom is operating from a $60-80K deficit. In total, the Great Hearts network is losing $38 million it could receive from the state to serve Arizona families. This gap has been filled by the generosity and sacrifice of you, our parents. Thank you for entrusting your children to our care and for investing more in your child’s education and formation than what is asked of parents whose students attend the district schools. I take great pride in the quality of education we provide for our students and the extra-curricular opportunities that avail them despite the funding gap. However, I take pride mostly in the character of our students and your commitment to believe their integrity and heart are most important for them to live a meaningful and purposeful life. Please consider learning more about the reasons for the funding gap and making your voice heard. If you have any desire to join Erik Twist down at the capitol, please let me know. Sincerely, Tax Credit Griffin Players Drama Performance Senior Thesis Panels
Standardized Testing
SAT – Tuesday, April 9th Please ensure your student: (1) gets a good night’s sleep, (2) eats a nourishing breakfast, (3) brings a small snack, (4) arrives to school on time, and (5) has no appointments scheduled before noon on this day. Additionally, please have him/her bring: (1) extra #2 pencils and (2) a calculator. Quarter 3 Evaluations 8th Grade Field Trip Regular Uniform Dress Code is required. Students will depart by bus at 8:15 a.m. sharp (please arrive by the start of school at 8:05 a.m.) and must bring a sack lunch to be eaten after their visit. Only water is permitted on the bus. Students will be released at the usual time of 3:05 p.m. The expectation is that all 8th grade students will attend. If your student is unable to attend, please contact Ms. McLoughlin at tmcloughlin@glendaleprep.org. Great Hearted Teachers As I’m sure you’ll agree, finding the right teachers to join our academic communities – faculty who are virtuous and have rich intellectual lives, who are subject-matter experts, committed to A life-long-learning and the true, good, and beautiful – is quite simply the most essential element of our academies’ success. Our recruiting efforts are tremendously strengthened by the “word-of-mouth” promotion of Great Hearts teaching opportunities to the broader local community through our own academy families. You were so gracious to share information about our Career Fair last month, and several of you asked if we could give you general materials regarding our recruitment/hiring to share with colleagues, friends, family members, and/or neighbors whom you’d love to encourage to work for Great Hearts. Please feel free to share this in any way you’d like – via email, social media, etc. Also, please always feel free to reach out to us directly at careers@greatheartsamerica.org. Thank you much, Science Fair If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Ustach at custach@glendaleprep.org Junior & Senior Promenade All attendees are required to attend dance lessons prior to Prom. Seniors and their guests must attend three hours of lessons, juniors and their guests must attend five hours. Students can, of course, choose to attend more than the required amount. It is the responsibility of the student to speak directly with Ms. Roiger or Ms. McLoughlin right away, if they have a conflict with the lesson schedule. Only 8 lessons remain: Tuesday & Thursday through April 25th from 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays, April 6th & 13th from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. All dance lessons will take place in the Art Room. Students, please enter through the gym lobby on Saturdays. Senior Dinner We ask all Senior parents to put together a photo collage of their child to be displayed at the Senior Dinner. Collages can span your graduate’s entire childhood, and may vary in size, but must not exceed the size of a poster board. Because collages will be displayed outdoors, photos should be placed in a frame (preferred, due to high winds) or firmly secured to your display. Please deliver your collage to the school by Thursday, May 16th. College Counseling Emory, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, University of Virginia, and Washington University in St. Louis will be hosting an information session on Thursday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Phoenix Country Day School. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here. The College Counseling department is trying to determine if there is enough interest to host a Summer SAT Workshop in June. If you are interested in having your student participate, please send an email to Mrs. Sarbacker at ksarbacker@glendaleprep.org. The workshop will begin with a practice test on Saturday, June 1st (8am – 12pm) and conclude with a second practice test on Saturday, June 15th (8am – 12pm). The group will meet Monday-Thursday (8am–12pm) from June 3rd through June 13th. The cost for the workshop will be $399. |
